PHOTOS FROM GREECE 2017

A lovely couple who owned a little taverna in Vougareli in central Greece. He was 3 years old when the Germans bombed their town. They still talk about it every day.

Part of the majestic Gorgopotamos Bridge near Phthiotis in eastern Greece, which had been blown up by the British in 1942, 75 years (almost to the day) before the photo was taken. It was a major strike against the Germans, because it cut their supply route to North Africa.

The shadow of Jac framed in an ancient arch in Arta in central western Greece. Her stance and profile had something of the Greek goddess Artemis about it.

Taken in a cafe in Micro Papingo in western Greece. The two men were intensely discussing something, probably either politics or the football. The younger men around them watched the banter, amused by the elders’ passion.

The remains of the old Metsovo pass. It’s closed to traffic now, but in the second world war it was the only route over the top of the central mountains. The new road on the left takes visitors on a longer, curvy, but much much more car-friendly route around the peaks.

Taken on an AusAID training trip to Can Tho in Vietnam in 1999. Every monkey wants to have their opinion on a shot.

A man and his dog outside a St Kilda cafe. While dad has his ciggie, coffee and a read, the little one looks like he’d rather be anywhere else. Or maybe that’s his default expression.

This little girl was of a fleeting moment as I passed her on a boat in Kashmir in 1986. We caught each other’s eye for a second. In her eyes I saw a depth. I still wonder what lay behind them. I didn’t notice the duckling under the window until many years later.

The above shot was taken in Seoul. A captured moment of joy among the brutalist architecture in the city’s main square. I titled it Chairman Mao meets Kim Jong-Il. If only.

This is a photo I took in Shanghai in 2004. It was featured in a photography magazine and in an artists’ exhibition at the ABC. A frozen moment in a sweaty street stall.

Taken backstage at a theatre in Asia. Jac was playing Madame Girl in Phantom of the Opera. The severe make-up and clothing was based on Mrs Danvers from the movie Rebecca. Perfect, I think. It was entered in the National Portrait Prize in 2017.

Also taken backstage, this time in Hong Kong. Even the boots had to be authentic to the time that Phantom was set. Jac’s hands, in doing up her laces, creates movement in a still shot.

I took this photo of Jac in a cliff side villa in Santorini. It was in 1999, eleven years after we were married just up the path in Firastefani. This was a frozen moment involving coffee, peace and a view of one of the world’s most beautiful places.

This was our Bella frolicking at St Kilda beach. She barked as she jumped.. giving the impression of viciousness, but there wasn’t anything in her but joy at that moment.

Taken on Victoria’s Wye River, in an area burnt out by fires a couple of years later. I first loved this photo for the capturing of the wing movement, but I have come to value the eyes of all the birds just as much, from the “what are you looking at” attitude of the one on the left, and the greed of both the flyer and the guy on the right.

Shot from the window of our apartment in Seoul, these four restaurant workers seemed, on first glance, to be copies of each other. But the similarities are outweighed by the differences. All four are looking at different places; no two have their postures, legs and arms the same. The only common factors are the cigarettes and the bench. Relief, rest and boredom.

A moment in a small village near Lijiang, China in 2006. The woman is proud of her little grandson, but the boy shows attitude to the camera.

Another shot of parental pride from the same village. This father was always playing with his son.. and he always had this expression of warmth and pride.

Jac falls on an ice lake in Amsterdam in 2002. The local girls turn the mishap into a party.
